DESCRIPTION:First Episode Psychosis is a challenging and sensitive condition for GPs to deal with in the course of their working day. By providing informed consultancy\, GPs have the opportunity to make an enormous difference to the lives of vulnerable young people and their communities.\nHeadspace Early Psychosis is a comprehensive\, early intervention mental health service for young people living north of the river and the Midland area experiencing a first episode of psychosis\, or who are at ultra high risk of psychosis. The service has been developed by Orygen Youth Health in Victoria\, based on its Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) model.\nJoin Holly Protoolis from headspace as she explains Early Psychosis and some of the issues around it\, and outlines the assessment and referral process for GPs.\nThe presentation will cover:\n• What is headspace Early Psychosis?\n• What is First Episode Psychosis?\n• What is ultra high risk of psychosis?\n• The link between trauma\, drugs and psychosis\n• How does headspace Early Psychosis work with young people and their families?\n• The role of the GP in Early Psychosis\n• Assessing and referring young people – assessing vulnerable groups\n• Key information regarding the referral process.

SUMMARY:Urology Updates for GPs
DESCRIPTION:Presented by some of Perth’s leading urologists\, this education session will cover some urology topics of interest and relevance to GPs.\nMost GPs would be aware that the majority of renal masses are found incidentally as a result of the widespread use of ultrasonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) as well as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed for problems often unrelated to the kidneys. This session will provide GPs with a systematic approach to further investigation and management of a small renal mass. In addition\, topics covered will be penile cancer\, and a relatively common\, but poorly recognised condition: Peyronie’s disease.  GPs will also gain insight into new urological surgery techniques that their patients may be undergoing.

SUMMARY:Obstetrics in Women of Advanced Maternal Age
DESCRIPTION:The average age of new mothers is increasing. This is reflected in national and local data. The proportion of mothers aged 35 and over has increased from 20% in 2005 to 22% in 2015\, while the proportion of mothers aged under 25 has decreased from 19% to 15%. \nPatients of advanced maternal age have increased risks of morbidity during pregnancy to both the mother and baby. This group of specialist obstetricians from SJG Subiaco Hospital will explore obstetric challenges more specific to this age group. This workshop will include a panel question time\, giving GP’s the opportunity to ask detailed questions.

This is due to higher rates of physical illness and metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance\, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. More than 50% of people with mental illness will develop metabolic syndrome. Marlene will examine this phenomena and discuss evidence based interventions that will prevent progression of this disease down the metabolic highway.  \nTOPIC: The Holy Grail on CVD Reduction in Type 2 Diabetes: Have we Found it?\nSPEAKER: Prof Michael D’Emden\, Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology\, Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital\, Vice President\, The Australian Diabetes Society \nReducing BGLs has been shown to reduce microvascular disease but up until now antidiabetic therapies (ADTs) have had no impact on the rates of macrovascular disease. Recently\, several new classes of ADTs have been introduced with promising effects on CV risks. Their role in improving cardiovascular outcomes in diabetes will be discussed. \nTOPIC: Intensifying Insulin: What Are Our Options?\nSPEAKER: A/Prof Gary Kilov\, Founding member\, The RACGP Diabetes Specific Interest Group; Co-founder of Primary Care Diabetes Society of Australia (PCDSA)  \nRecently\, our options for intensification of insulin regimens have changed considerably as emerging evidence and changes to the PBS have afforded us new opportunities with non-insulin therapies\, in addition to more traditional insulin intensification practices. \nTOPIC: Management of Diabetic Foot in General Practice – Practical Advice\nSPEAKER: Malindu Fernando – Clinic Coordinator – Podiatry\, Queensland University of Technology \nGPs are often frustrated by the large gaps between guideline recommendations and the practical realities of managing diabetic feet in primary care.
