SUMMARY:The Cutting Edge: Essential Surgical Skills Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Cutting Edge: Essential Surgical Skills workshop aims to assist the GP and Nurse Practitioner in attaining an improved level of competence in the basic techniques required for minor surgery.  \nThis workshop focuses on the most commonly performed procedures. Safety is emphasised as well as the acquisition of one sound technique in each skill area. It features a combination of didactic sessions and hands-on sessions utilising animal tissue and other simulation models. \nIt is of particular relevance for rural GP Proceduralists and Nurse Practitioners and to those seeking to refresh procedural skills and to update knowledge. \nWORKSHOP CONTENT \nPresentation and practical sessions:\n– Diathermy / Hyfrecator set up (demonstration)\n– Instrumentation – choice\, handling and safety\n– Knot tying\n– Sutures\, suturing techniques and suture removal\n– Traumatic wounds\n– Planning the excision\, including sebaceous cysts\, mucuous membrane wounds and punch\, incision and excision biopsies. \nWorkshop presentations:\n– Consent procedure\n– Understanding wound healing – revision session\n– Haemostasis\n– Local anaesthesia\n– Complications  \nTraining Grants:\nThe Australian Government is offering training grants of $2000 per day to rural and remote procedural and emergency medicine GPs to maintain their respective skills.  \nFor further information about the grants contact:\nCheryl Shepley\nRACGP National Rural Faculty\n1800 636 764\nrural.procedural.grants@racgp.org.au
