SUMMARY:Before the Royal Flying Doctor Service – RFDS Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Have a wonderful night of Western Australian medical history and help raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) and the Western Australian Medical Museum. This fundraiser will be held and hosted by Emeritus Professor Max Kamien and presented by Dr Joe Holland’s grandson – Peter Holland. \nHear from the contemporaneous diary entries of Dr Joe Holland. His mercy dash from Perth to Halls Creek\, by cattle ship\, model T Ford\, horse and foot. \nJuly 29\, 1917 – Dr Joe Holland\, a West Perth GP\, is called to the Murray Street post office to ‘consult’ with Fred Tuckett\, the postmaster at Halls Creek (population 20). A stockman\, Jimmy Darcy\, has been crushed by his fallen horse and has not passed urine for 68 hours. Dr Holland diagnoses a ruptured urethra and through morse code\, instructs Fred Tuckett\, on placing a supra-pubic catheter into Jimmy Darcy’s bladder. The operation\, done with a pocket knife\, is successful. Fred Tuckett says he would be grateful if Dr Holland would come to Halls Creek to take charge of Jimmy Darcy’s care. It took 26 days for Dr John Holland to get to Halls Creek. His mission of mercy attracted national attention. It was an important link in the chain of events that led to the establishment of an outback Aeromedical Service now known as the Royal Flying Doctor Service.\ncost $75 – includes drinks and a light supper

SUMMARY:Hot Topics GP Update Webinar Series: Men’s Health
DESCRIPTION:On the face of it\, men’s health should be straight forward. However\, significant uncertainties remain\, including in crucial areas such as PSA testing\, common areas such as LUTS\, and controversial areas such as testosterone replacement. \nUsing cases and based on recent evidence and guidelines\, in this interactive live webinar we will explore:\n– the latest data for and against prostate cancer screening (what’s the role of a single PSA test for men in their 50s?)\n– management of difficult to treat lower urinary tract symptoms (is there a role for combination medications for overactive bladder? how can we help idiopathic nocturnal polyuria?)\, and\n– assessing and treating erectile dysfunction (who does need testosterone replacement?). \nDr Neal Tucker from NB Medical UK\, and Dr Genevieve Yates\, Australia\, both practicing GPs with a passion for medical education\, have a look at this single topic.

SUMMARY:simGP Pain Management Workshop
DESCRIPTION:simGP is an innovative digital simulation program and the new way to do case studies designed specifically for GPs. It presents a real-world patient scenario\, with presenting symptoms similar to general practice. The challenge is to use a consultative diagnostic approach and engage with your peers to investigate and uncover the underlying condition and discuss appropriate treatment approaches. \nDuring this session you will have the opportunity to tackle a virtual patient consultation (simGP) and engage with your colleagues to discuss best practice\, then participate in an educational debrief from a specialist. This will be a chance to review current best practice and discuss the practical challenges raised during the simulated consultation. \nLearning Objectives\n1. Measure and assess patient pain levels in primary care to facilitate functional-based action plans\n2. Understand the impact of pain on function and implement management options to improve QOL for patients with pain\n3. Explain the biopsychosocial pain paradigm to patients as a basis for individualised treatment decisions\n4. Understand the role of analgesic treatment options in pain management in primary care

SUMMARY:Women in Medicine breakfast
DESCRIPTION:RACGP WA invites you and your female medical colleagues to celebrate International Women’s Day\, to connect with peers and hear from an insightful guest speaker\, Katie McDonald from Boutique Advisors. \nThis year’s theme for International Women’s Day is #Balanceforbetter\, a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world. While slightly more that 50% of RACGP members are women\, there is more work required before that balance is reflected in all aspects of the profession. \nOur speaker\, Katie\, has over 20 years’ experience in financial planning. She specialises in women’s finances; helping women build their confidence when dealing with personal finances. \nFor aspiring and current practice owners\, Katie also assists small business owners with managing their future financial wellbeing.
