SUMMARY:Early Psychosis: Why early intervention is so important
DESCRIPTION:Dr Gordon Shymko\, headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program Clinical Director\, will be addressing the essential issues surrounding early psychosis diagnosis and treatment. \nThis education session will aim to educate GPs on aspects of psychosis including diagnosis\, recognizing early signs\, management\, treatment pathways\, and the importance of early intervention for positive patient outcomes. It will describe the signs and symptoms of early psychosis\, helping GPs to make correct diagnoses in a more timely manner for best patient outcomes. It will explain the clinical staging model for psychosis\, defining each of the three stages and discussing the broad and specific interventions for each. The session will also discuss pharmacological options for psychotic patients within each stage and look at referral pathways for community services. \nFollowing Dr Shymko’s presentation\, a panel discussion will be held with a Team Coordinator and Functional Recovery Program Team Coordinator from the headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program\, as well as a consumer representative. \nLearning outcomes for this event include:\n1. Detail the importance of early intervention in psychosis \n2.Describe the signs and symptoms of each clinical stage of psychosis \n3.Outline treatment options for each stage to optimise patient outcomes \n4.Explain general pharmacological best practice for early psychosis intervention \n5.Describe treatment and referral pathways for psychosis patients. \nThis is an RACGP Accredited Activity that attracts 3 Category 2 RACGP points. \nFor more information\, contact Black Swan Health on 9201 0044 or email education@blackswanhealth.com.au

SUMMARY:Antenatal Risk Questionnaire Training
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, the Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines for Mental Health Care were updated to include the Antenatal Risk Questionnaire (ANRQ). \nDeveloped by Professor Marie-Paule Austin\, the questionnaire will ensure the 300\,000 Australian women who have a baby each year will have their emotional wellbeing checked by clinicians during and after pregnancy as a part of their routine maternity and postnatal care. \nUndertaking the ANRQ as routine antenatal care is now funded under the Medicare Benefits Scheme. \nSt John of God Raphael Services is delighted to invite GPs and obstetricians to attend a free workshop\, led by Professor Marie-Paule Austin\, to learn about the benefits of psychosocial risk assessment and using the ANRQ. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nREGISTER AT: https://sjog.org.au/ANRQtraining

SUMMARY:Diabetes Update 2017 – Free Webcast
DESCRIPTION:FREE LIVE WEBCAST \nWhile the seminar is taking place in Brisbane\, health professionals across Australia can watch the live webcast in the comfort of their own home or clinic. The webcast audience will have the opportunity to ask the speakers questions and participate in polling during the event. Stream the seminar on your computer\, tablet or internet-connected device. Instructions on how to log into the webcast will be emailed to registered delegates in the weeks before the event. \nPROGRAM \nTOPIC: Managing Metabolic Syndrome in Mental Illness\nSPEAKER: Dr Marlene Tham\, Director of Melbourne Weight Loss; Director of Medical & Mind Weight Loss \nPeople with severe mental illness have an average life expectancy 20 years less than the general population. This is due to higher rates of physical illness and metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance\, pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. More than 50% of people with mental illness will develop metabolic syndrome. Marlene will examine this phenomena and discuss evidence based interventions that will prevent progression of this disease down the metabolic highway. \nTOPIC: The Holy Grail on CVD Reduction in Type 2 Diabetes: Have we Found it?\nSPEAKER: Prof Michael D’Emden\, Director of Diabetes and Endocrinology\, Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital\, Vice President\, The Australian Diabetes Society \nReducing BGLs has been shown to reduce microvascular disease but up until now antidiabetic therapies (ADTs) have had no impact on the rates of macrovascular disease. Recently\, several new classes of ADTs have been introduced with promising effects on CV risks. Their role in improving cardiovascular outcomes in diabetes will be discussed. \nTOPIC: Intensifying Insulin: What Are Our Options?\nSPEAKER: A/Prof Gary Kilov\, Founding member\, The RACGP Diabetes Specific Interest Group; Co-founder of Primary Care Diabetes Society of Australia (PCDSA) \nRecently\, our options for intensification of insulin regimens have changed considerably as emerging evidence and changes to the PBS have afforded us new opportunities with non-insulin therapies\, in addition to more traditional insulin intensification practices. \nTOPIC: Management of Diabetic Foot in General Practice – Practical Advice\nSPEAKER: Malindu Fernando – Clinic Coordinator – Podiatry\, Queensland University of Technology \nGPs are often frustrated by the large gaps between guideline recommendations and the practical realities of managing diabetic feet in primary care. This session is designed to help GPs overcome these issues while at the same time using best available evidence and expert advice. \nQ&A – Expert Panel
